Things To Ask Yourself When Planning Your Wedding

Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now what?

You’re likely to become engrossed in the planning process and become completely overwhelmed. It’s ok. We’re here to help, hold your hand, and advocate for you throughout the entire process.

A few questions you should ask yourself from the get-go…

What is your budget?
Be realistic. How much can you reasonably spend on your wedding? The budget is the deciding factor on what kind of wedding you can have. If you want to invite 150 guests, but also want that photographer with an $8,000 price tag… you’ll need to have at least $30,000 just to start.

Do I want a small-micro wedding or a huge bash?
The number of guests you expect to invite to your wedding will affect your venue choice, budget, catering options, and more.

Where do you imagine having your wedding?
What kind of weather do you want? Do you want it inside or out? Are you having it in your hometown, or on a beach in a foreign country?
All of these questions will help you and your partner whittle down the location of where the wedding will be. This will also be dependent on your budget.

Lastly, how involved do you want your families to be in the planning process?
This is a question that I feel isn’t asked as often, because it tends to spark a nerve… but we can’t tiptoe around the question. I’m a highly loyal planner, and I work specifically for my contracted clients, and no one else. I typically have to advocate for my clients, and the majority of them have family issues they’ve encountered, well before they got engaged. If you’re worried at all about any potential issues arising with your own parents, in laws, and any other family or friends, hiring a planner is a non-negotiable.

Why Brunk + Co

The one thing that I have noticed while working in any field, is the inauthenticity of some of these other professionals. Do I believe that all clients should get what they’re asking for? Within reason. It’s a harsh reality, but you can’t always have the picturesque pinterest wedding, with a $10,000 budget. The biggest issue I’ve noticed, is the blatant lying just to get a sale. Some other professionals will sell a vision to their clients, and set them up for failure. We don’t do that. I’m 100% honest with you from the get-go. Want $5,000 worth of flowers with $2,000 budget? Well, we’re going to have to go through everything you want, and pick out cheaper selections of flowers, otherwise, we’ll have to pivot and go in a new direction. It’s not always the answer you want to hear, but it’s better to learn in the beginning, rather than a month before the wedding when you have to pay the final floral bill.

The venue has a coordinator, why hire an outside coordinator or planner?

This is a question that everyone asks in my consultations. Every. Single. Time.

Look, if you’re a bride that is SUPER into planning and organization, you have bridesmaids that are going to help you DIY all of your decor and write your timeline, and 3 aunts to come into the venue on the day of and decorate for you… then don’t get an outside coordinator. The venue coordinator will usher the vendors coming in, on where to set up. You’ll just have to trust that the DJ you hired, is experienced enough to run through the timeline effectively. It’s not a dig on all venue coordinators, but they aren’t being paid by you. They’re being paid by the venue. Their loyalty, is to the venue, not you. Another harsh reality, and it may sound snarky, but it’s the God’s honest truth. You’ll likely show up on the day of, not really have an idea of what’s going on, and just be ushered through the day.

BUT that’s not really the case for most people. When planning a wedding, you learn REALLY QUICK who your friends are…you also learn new things about your partner, parents, and friends that you never expected. Everyone is distressed and tense, and sometimes, planning a wedding can tear people apart. THAT is why you hire a planner or outside coordinator. This event is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. People look at the price tag on a planner, and are like, “it’s fine, I can do this myself.” Can you though? Did you know planners can get you discounts on rentals and other vendors? JUST by working with that vendor, they’ve worked with in the past. Some planners have wholesale accounts with different decor companies, and can order supplies for you at wholesale price. By hiring an outside planner or coordinator, you’re hiring someone who is loyal to you. Not to a venue, not to another vendor, and not to your mother (you haven’t spoken to in 3 years). We advocate for you, your partner, and your bank account.

“Couldn’t have asked for a better wedding planner!”

“I hired Brunk + co 4 days before covid hit and that will always be an important part of my engagement and wedding story. I truly couldn’t have pulled it all together without her. My partner works a lot, I’m a teacher, and we have a 7 year old son. Over the two years it took to pull my wedding together (we had to postpone once for family reasons) Ashley took charge. She handled the vendor changes, any issues that came up I had full faith she would handle it. She helped my vision come to life, and I get told constantly I had the most beautiful and thoughtful wedding they had ever been to. She took all of our ideas and brought them to life in such a beautiful way. Forever grateful.”
